Motorola intros more Bluetooth headsets: The MOTOPURE H15 and H780

Section: Communications, Accessories, Cellphones, Mobile

Motorola Bluetooth Headsets

Recently, Motorola introduced two new universal Bluetooth headsets dubbed MOTOPURE H15 and H780. Motorola says that both headsets feature groundbreaking noise cancellation technology, stylistic and functional design as well as Motorola’s CrystalTalk technology which enables the headsets to produce clear sound.

If you have both a business and a personal phone, the headsets take advantage of its multipoint technology and pair one headset to both lines.  In addition, the MOTOPURE H15 features a flip design that comes with RapidConnect technology which Motorola claims makes the headset not only easy-to-use but saves battery life as well.

Motorola also says that you can get an hour of usage time from the headset even if you charge it for only 15 minutes.  And when you are recharging using the desktop stand, you can still accept calls without needing to pull out the headset from the stand. As for the MOTOPURE H780, the headset can give up to 7 hours of talk time per battery charge and features a 9mm speaker. The headset features a brushed, carbon fiber finish made of spun metal and textured side band.

Motorola will start shipping the MOTOPURE H15 and H780 headsets by the fourth quarter of this year.

Panasonic adds the Toughbook 8 series to its line-up

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops

Panasonic Toughbook 8 notebook series

Those who have been looking for tough and ruggedized notebooks will be glad to know that Panasonic is coming out with three Toughbook 8 notebook models - the F8, W8 and T8.

All three notebooks with their Intel Core 2 Duo Processors are lightweight, ranging from 1.3 to 1.7 kgs courtesy of their magnesium alloy casing and chassis. Panasonic put in flexible internal connectors so the Toughbook can withstand lots of abuse.  The hard drives and LCDs are shock mounted to keep them protected.  Also, don’t worry about dumping liquids onto the keyboard because it is spill-resistant.

In addition, the Panasonic Toughbook 8 series of notebooks also come with 802.11 a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0 and most importantly the Gobi 3G technology. This enables users to select between mobile broadband carriers or international roaming functionality which will work with CDMA2000, EV-DO and HSPA/UMTS/GPRS technologies.

The Toughbook F8 features a 14.1-inch wide display and an internal optical drive, a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, up to 4GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, an integrated DVD multi drive, TPM security chip and runs Windows Vista with an XP-downgrade option. The Toughbook W8 packs in all the F8’s features except for its smaller 12.1-inch LCD and a modest 1.20 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.  Finally, we have the Toughbook T8 which boasts of the same features, as the W8 but comes with an extra ergonomic rubber hand strap and a Display Image Rotation software.

The Panasonic Toughbook W8, T8 and F8 will all be released by November.  Both Toughbooks W8 and T8 will set you back $2,099 while the Toughbook F8 will have an SRP of $2,499.

iRex’s 1000SW e-reader won’t have 3G — no matter how much we say otherwise

Filed under:

If you’ve been following the new iRex reader, the 1000 series, you’ll be disappointed to know — as we were — that the high-end 1000SW will not come equipped with 3G connectivity as we previously reported. Apparently jkOnTheRun got in touch with iRex rep Loeki van der Lee after unsuccessfully searching for hard evidence on the feature, and he confirmed that the device will sport WiFi and Bluetooth, but nothing more. Honestly, based on his short responses and the information we snagged from Forbes the day before the announcement, it sounds as if plans might have changed at the last minute. Still, it won’t alter the fact that the $849 device won’t provide the same functionality as a $359 Kindle… though it does have that snazzy Wacom stylus.

First up is the Cosmopolitan Pink VAIO CR pack, which features a 14.1-inch LCD, 1.3-megapixel camera, Core 2 Duo CPU, Bluetooth, a built-in DVD burner and a matching case / mouse. Ditch office paper for the iRex digital readers

Section: Gadgets / Other, Miscellaneous

iRex Digital Reader

iRex has announced new ebook readers that could potentially steal the spotlight from the now-old Amazon Kindle.  iRex has announced three such readers, each of them with a 10.2” e-ink display.  The differences between the models are the two Digital Reader 1000S and Digital Reader 1000SW ones have touch screens with styli, and the 1000SW one has 3G, bluetooth and Wi-FI.  The bottom of the line Digital Reader 1000 has the same features, without the touch input, bluetooth, 3G, or Wi-Fi.

All of the Digital Readers can support both PDFs and Office Documents, neither of which the Kindle can support.  The 1000S and 1000SW can even edit PDFs and Office documents through the use of their touch screen.  iRex is trying to advertise the Digital Readers to companies, on their website claiming that thousands of documents are printed for offices, only to be thrown away sometimes within a day.  According to iRex the Digital Reader will save paper allowing you to put the documents on the Digital Reader and edit them with the touch screen on the 1000S and 1000 SW.

It’s doubtful the iRex Digital Readers will overtake the Amazon Kindle any time soon, especially with prices starting at $650 for the 1000.  It is nice to see something new in the space.  Maybe they can force Amazon to innovate on the Kindle.  Removing that ugly keyboard for a touch screen would push me over the edge for a Kindle especially at the current price.  Granted, the iRex Digital Readers are designed with offices in mind, but I could imagine some consumers wanted that functionality without having to pay $650.

The Spark By IDEO And Project Inkwell

The Spark By IDEO And Project Inkwell

The idea of every child having their own laptop for class is coming closer to reality as every day passes. This time IDEO and Project Inkwell have a concept called the Spark, which looks aimed at bringing the laptop-like devices to students, where they can easily learn anytime and anywhere. The Spark will have wireless networking for Internet-based learning, which will also allow students to learn in any environment. Some of the rather interesting points of the Spark include a zipper pocket which is designed to hold a spare battery, and even a Bluetooth wireless mouse. The slim keyboard will also make toting this gadget around easier, as opposed to the usual thick keyboards. It sure looks like every child in the near future will have their own laptop.

Commodore hops on the netbook bandwagon with UMMD 8010/F

Filed under:

As we’ve seen countless times by now, the folks behind the Commodore brand will stop at nothing to keep the venerable name alive, and they’ve now finally hopped on the biggest bandwagon going, with the UMMD 8010/F marking the company’s first foray into the netbook game. Unfortunately, apart from that familiar logo, there’s not too much that stands out here, with the netbook packing a 10-inch screen, a 1.6GHz VIA C7-M processor, an 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, built-in WiFi, and optional Bluetooth. The nearly $600 price tag also doesn’t do it any favors, but we’re guessing there’s at least a few nostalgic folks out there that’ll add one to their Commodore collection as soon as they’re available.
